Planting - City of Buffalo

Volunteer to Help

We will need hundreds of volunteers to help us do a massive tree planting all over Western New York in October and November, the next planting window. Please consider joining us. Sign up now by clicking this link, e-mail paul.maurer@citcomm.com or call Paul at 716-888-9766. We could use large groups organized by churches, schools, colleges, corporations, etc. Since most of these plantings will be via the "bare root" tree planting method, anybody can help. We will train you.

Make a Donation to Re-TreeWNY

In collaboration with local elected officials at all levels of government and business leaders throughout the region, we are working to secure public and corporate grants to cover the expense of purchasing products and supplies, but individual donations made directly to Re-TreeWNY will provide the necessary resources to ensure our future success. Click here to make your secure contribution to WNY Americorps on behalf of Re-Tree WNY. 100% of your contribution will be directed towards Re-TreeWNY

Contact Your Legislator

As our federal legislators in Washington and state legislators in Albany are fighting to have appropriations for reforestation efforts directed to Western New York, they can use our help as concerned citizens in helping other legislators throughout the country and state understand the significant impact the October Storm had to one of our region's most treasured assets. For more information on how to contact your federal and state representatives and to also ensure your town and city representatives are concerned with the tree canopy in your neighborhood, please visit http://directories.erie.gov/officialdir. For towns and cities located outside of Erie County, please contact your County Board of Elections for appropriate contact information.

Carvings for a Cause

Remember "Herd About Buffalo", the successful public art project and fundraiser from 2000; we'll it's back - sort of - in a new form and with a twist. Rather than simply discarding the tremendous stock pile of large tree stumps leftover after hazardous trees were removed from public streets and byways, local artists are teaming up to shape those stumps into significant and historic Buffalo icons which will be put on display all across Western New York. If you or your business are interested in sponsoring one of these creations, please contact Therese Forton-Barnes at 716-868-8868 or visit www.carvingsforacause.com for more information.

Buy a Popeye Pod

As one of Western New York's premier pizzerias and Italian pubs, Pizza Plant has agreed to make a donation to Re-Tree WNY on behalf of patrons who purchase the 'Popeye Pod' - a mighty combo of fresh spinach, mozzarella, tomato, black olives, parmesan & a little "olive oyl" on spinach dough of course. Visit either of their Williamsville locations, or go to www.pizzaplant.com for more details.

Contribute to the ReLeaf Fund

The Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy and The HSBC Bank Foundation have teamed up to raise funds to cover the cost of expenses of tree repair, maintenance, and reforestation in the 1200 acres of the Buffalo Olmsted Parks. Visit any HSBC Bank branch office to make a donation that will directly benefit the Buffalo Olmsted Parks.

Attend a Tree and Shrub Repair Clinic

Local vendors and community activists like The Home Depot, The Park School, and the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy will be conducting clinics throughout the planting seasons to help provide tree repair, maintenance, and replacement information to individual citizens and community groups. Please check out our Events page for more details on when the next clinic or Tree Symposium will be conducted in your neighborhood.

Planting - CITY OF BUFFALO

If you are interested in doing a neighborhood tree planting this Spring in the City of Buffalo, Re-Tree WNY is asking all interested groups to follow the steps outlined below in order to secure trees for the spring planting:

Step 1: Register your group here:
www.city-buffalo.org/retreewny

Step 2: Once your registration has been received and accepted, you will be able to access the online tree-planting database at the same site.

Step 3: The online tree-planting database will show specific locations in your neighborhood that have been pre-approved for tree planting. From this database, you can reserve your tree planting locations for the spring.

Step 4: After you have chosen the locations for your trees, you may choose a species from the suggested list provided by the database for each location. At this time, we cannot guarantee that the species you choose will be the species you receive, but we will do our best to honor selections.

Step 5: If this is your first neighborhood tree planting with us stay alert for further information regarding a MANDATORY tree planting informational session provided by the Olmsted Parks Conservancy. Otherwise all groups will receive regular reminders on upcoming dates and steps to be taken before the planting weekend.

All trees must be reserved by March 14th, 2008!

Important Dates:

* Learn to plant a tree with the Olmsted Parks Conservancy on March 29th & April 5th

* Please schedule your tree planting for the weekend of May 3rd and 4th

* Trees will be available for pick up May 2nd and 3rd

We hope you will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to improve the condition of our city and your neighborhood!
